Ingels, Lafon "Fonny"
Lafon (Fonny) Riker Ingels, born in Lexington Dec. 2, 1925, died the morning of March 10, 2010, at his residence at Mayfair Village in Lexington. He was the son of Martha Riker Ingels and Evan Shelby Ingels. He was a graduate of University High School and the University of Kentucky, where he was a member of Phi Delta Theta fraternity.
A decorated veteran of World War II, he served as a Staff Sergeant for the U.S. Army in Company M, 309th Infantry Regiment, and was in the “Battle of the Bulge,” earning a Good Conduct Medal, a EAME Theater Ribbon with three Bronze Stars, a Victory Medal, a Purple Heart Medal, and a Bronze Star Medal. He was the former owner of Clay Ingels Company in Lexington.
An avid traveler and horseman, he fox hunted throughout the Bluegrass and in England and Ireland. He also was a Thoroughbred breeder, owner, and farm owner. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, Lexington Club, Keeneland Club, and the Iroquois Hunt Club.
He was preceded in death by a sister, Jane Ingels Hammonds, and brother-in-law, Lewis Everett Hammonds. He is survived by a sister, Lida Clay Givens; brother-in-law Ambrose Witherspoon (Buster) Givens; nieces Martha Givens Nicol (Dr. Bruce Nicol); Ellen Givens Chapman (William Chapman); nephews Charles Adams Hammonds (Sandy), Evan Ingels Hammonds (Susan), Ambrose Witherspoon (Bo) Givens Jr. (Alexa); and numerous great-nieces and great-nephews.
Services 3 pm Friday, March 12, in the Lexington Cemetery. Memorials to First Presbyterian Church or Blue Grass Trust for Historic Preservation.
