Military Service to Our Country

William Rice Milward (1842-1915)
Born February 5, 1842, he was just getting started in his father's business when the Civil War developed. He enlisted in Company "A". 21st Kentucky Volunteers, Union Army.

Col. William Rice MilwardWhen mustered in on December 31, 1861, he was elected 1st Lieutenant, although not yet 20 years of age. He was promoted to Captain October 27, 1862 and commissioned Lieutenant Colonel January 31, 1865. He was in command of the 21st Regiment when it was mustered out, January 1866.

Although a Union officer, he was in good relations with the Confederate veterans organizations. Morgan's men took him in as an honorary. Example of good feeling is The Lexington Leader of April 20, 1915 story for all Confederate Veterans to meet at The Lexington Cemetery gate and attend his funeral in a body.

After Col. W. R. Milward had been mustered out of military duty, he quickly became intensely interested in the family business again, taking a very active part in charge of all funerals.
