Irene Stamper Howard
Thursday 25th of April 1929 - Sunday 30th of May 2021
Irene Howard, 92, passed away on May 30, at University of Kentucky Hospital. She was born on April 25, 1929 in Carter County, KY, to the late Dewitt and Ada Kiser Stamper. After spending her childhood on her family farm, Irene attended Morehead State University and became a teacher upon graduating. While in college she met the love of her life, her late husband, DH Howard, and the two were wed on June 4,1951 and were married for 62 years. Although being a teacher gave her much pride and fulfillment, she eventually gave up her career to dedicate her time to her husband, children, and home. Her children were grateful to have a mother that was there for them from the moment they opened their eyes in the morning until they shut their eyes at night, always making them feel safe. Throughout her life Irene was an active participant in the church and a member of Immanuel Baptist Church. She enjoyed a variety of activities, including golf, bridge, homemaker’s clubs, oil painting, square dancing, and gathering with friends and neighbors on her back porch. Her lifelong love of gardening was a passion passed down to her by her own mother, and continues with her daughter and granddaughter. She enjoyed traveling with her husband and felt fortunate to have seen much of the United States by his side.
In the later years, both Irene and her husband were blessed to have a wonderful group of home healthcare workers that cared for and loved them, to which her family is appreciative for all of their dedication and loyalty. Irene is preceded in death by her parents, Dewitt and Ada Stamper, brothers Wilson (Mary) and Harlan (Sally), and her son, Michael Howard. She is survived by her daughter, Rebecca S. Howard, granddaughters Amanda Brooke Williams and Tara Barker, grandson Michael Royce Barker, and niece JoAnne (Larry) Virgilio.
Visitation will be held on Wednesday, June 2, from 5 to 7 PM at Milward-Southland, 391 Southland Drive. The funeral will proceed on Thursday, June 3 at 11 AM at Milward-Southland. Burial will follow at the Lexington cemetery. In lieu of flowers the family suggest donations to Paralyzed Veterans of America, (www.pva.org). So sorry for your loss.
My respects goes to the Howard family on the passing of Irene...I was fortunate and blessed in being the son-in-law to Mr. & Mrs. Howard for several years and admired their love for one another and family... My sympathy to Tara and Royce on the passing of their grandmother and also to Amanda Brooke, my former stepdaughter. I know the closeness and bond you shared with your grandmother and admired the love you shown to her. My deepest condolences also to Becky...Your mother was a wonderful woman and she did share many of those qualities in you as you helped raise Brooke, Royce, and Tara...Your mother cared deeply about family and you certainly do too... With Love, Chris
We miss your smiling face ! Your gardening club friend , Annette Milch
