Albert Earl Southwood

Thursday 12th of October 1944 - Tuesday 1st of June 2021

Albert Earl Southwood

Albert Earl Southwood passed away on June 1st in Lexington, Kentucky. He was preceded in death by his parents, Edith and Brent C. Southwood, and his brother, Brent E. Southwood. He is survived by his nieces, Amy (Steve Culler) Southwood and Amanda Southwood (Matthew) Williard; a great-nephew, Michael Southwood Williard; and his sister-in-law, Rachel Southwood.

Albert was born on October 12, 1944 in Fitzsimons, Colorado, where his father was stationed during WWII. The family moved back to Lexington at the end of the war. As you might expect from someone who grew up in Lexington, Al loved horse racing. If you were looking for him during the months of April and October, he could generally be found at Keeneland. Al was also a lifelong University of Kentucky football fan and endured both the peaks and the valleys of that program with equal stoicism. Albert also loved to travel, and was able to do so widely both before and after he retired.

No accounting of Albert’s life would be complete without mentioning his best friend, Joe Scott. From splitting insanely complicated superfecta bets at Keeneland, to holding season tickets for UK football, to traveling both overseas and around the United States, Joe, his wife Patty, and his daughters, Rush and Jane, were Al’s lifelong friends. Although Joe passed away in 2016, Patty, Rush and Jane remained a huge part of Al’s life until the very end, and the Southwoods are grateful to all of them for their friendship and support.

A celebration of life is being planned for the end of June. If you are moved to do so, memorial donations are suggested to Bluegrass Hospice Care Center, 1733 Harrodsburg Rd., Lexington, KY 40504.
