Ralph Neilsen was born November 2, 1934 in Cleveland, Ohio and passed away January 30, 2019 in Nashville, Tennessee. Mr. Neilsen was pre-deceased by his parents, Harold and Lena Neilsen, and by his wife, Audrey Neilsen. He is survived by his sons, Walter (Beth) of Nashville, Tennessee and Gregory (Susan) of Buffalo, New York; his sister, Jean Hickey, of Lakewood, Ohio; grandchildren Erin, Sophia, Hannah, Benjamin and Tyler; and special friend, Janet Sommer, of Raleigh, North Carolina.
Mr. Neilsen graduated from Plain City High School in Plain City, Ohio and The Ohio State University with a degree in accounting. After serving two years in the Army, he began a career in the accounting field in Cleveland, Ohio. Mr. Neilsen then joined Island Creek Coal Company and moved to Lexington in 1973 with his family. He spent 23 years with Island Creek Coal ultimately becoming Vice President of Administration. Upon retirement from Island Creek Coal, Mr. Neilsen returned to the accounting industry where he worked during the tax season until finally retiring for good at age 80. He was an avid golfer and past president of Spring Valley Country Club. Mr. Neilsen was friendly, kind and gracious to everyone that he met.
A memorial service honoring Mr. Neilsen’s life will be held Sunday, February 17th at 2 P.M. at the Milward Funeral Home at 391 Southland Drive, Lexington, Kentucky 40503 with a visitation starting at 1 P.M. that day. In lieu of flowers the family asks that donations be made to the UK Sanders-Brown Center on Aging, P.O. Box 34184, Lexington, Kentucky 40588.
