Janis Rae Kearns, 69, passed away Friday, August 27, 2021. Jan was born in Boardman, Ohio to the late William and Dolores (Snyder) Wynn on April 20, 1952.

Jan was a graduate of Ohio University where she received her Bachelor’s degree. She played tennis and swam on the Bobcat Girls Swim Team while attending college and also assisted the Canadian Olympic Team as a guide in Munich during the 1972 Olympic Summer Games. On February 10, 1979, Jan wed Dan Kearns and together they celebrated 42 years of marriage. She was an advertising executive at the Lexington Herald Leader until her retirement.

Jan was very active with a love of not only swimming and tennis, but also running. She was ever the optimist and full of positive energy and a light in her family’s lives. Jan was a huge supporter of her family including her grandchildren as she watched them grow and succeed. Most of all, she was a dedicated wife, mother, and grandmother who will be deeply missed, but will forever live in the hearts of those who had the privilege of knowing her.

Left to cherish her memory is her husband, Dan Kearns; son, Austin and his wife, Abby Kearns; grandsons, Aubrey, Brady, and Cooper Kearns, and her beloved dog, Roscoe. In addition to her parents, Jan was preceded in death by her uncle, Fred Snyder.

A memorial gathering to celebrate Jan’s life will be from 5:00 pm – 7:00 pm, Friday, September 3rd at Milward – Southland located at 391 Southland Drive.

Dan, Austin and family, I just learned of Jan's passing from our Boardman High School website and colleagues. We are all deeply saddened. Jan and I grew up together. We were in brownies together, slept over at each other's houses, went to Camp Fitch in the summers together and swam at Boardman Canfield swim club. We rode bikes together, attended Ohio University. She was so much fun. We laughed, we were very athletic and participated in many sports. There are so many great stories. At camp, we won all the athletic events and took sports very seriously. Jan was always a beautiful person. Very upbeat. I am sure you have very fond memories. The video of Jan is so lovely. So nice to see that she enjoyed a happy, live with her family. I know that you have many wonderful memories of Jan. We surely do. She brings a smile to my face when I think back about how lucky we were. Bonnie Froom Pinkerton

Dan, Austin and family, It was such a pleasure to have known and worked with Jan during her time at the Herald-Leader. She was always full of energy and kept a lot of her friends and work associates on there toes just trying to keep up with her, Ron Thurman especially. We're truly sorry for your families loss as I'm sure she is going to be missed in such a big way, by all of you and her many many friends. Respectfully, David and Darlene Leet
