Dr. Martha Marshall “Martha Louise” Foster, 86, passed away on January
12, 2022 at the Willows at Hamburg in Lexington, KY. Dr. Foster was born on
January 15, 1935 in Alexandria, LA, and was the daughter of Louise Pierson
Marshall and Lemuel Pierce Marshall. She was married for many years to Dr.
George Logan Foster from Lexington, who passed away in 1991. She was preceded in death by her sister,
Elizabeth Meeker Marshall, and her brother, Clarence Pierson Marshall, both of
New Orleans, LA.
Dr. Foster graduated from Newcomb College of Tulane University;
she received her Medical Degree from Tulane University School of Medicine in
1960. She met her husband George during her residency at Charity Hospital in
New Orleans, and ultimately practiced psychiatry for 43 years. She and George
settled in Lexington, KY, where she was an engaged member of the community,
involved in the Lexington Antiques Fair, the Lexington Ball and the Bluegrass
Trust for Historic Preservation. She was a lover of antiques, the arts and the
Creole cuisine she grew up with in New Orleans. She was an avid painter,
gardener and a wonderful cook in her free time.
Dr. Foster was descended from an old and distinguished Louisiana
family. She was the granddaughter of Dr. Clarence Pierson, superintendent of
Louisiana’s Central and South Eastern State Mental Hospitals, who inspired her
career in medicine. She was great-granddaughter of Louisiana Circuit Judge
David Pierson.
Dr. Foster was a devoted mother. She is survived by her three
sons, Logan (Lucy) Foster of Winchester, KY, Charles Foster of Goshen, KY, and
Marshall (Shanti) Foster of Seattle, WA, and many grandchildren: Logan’s: Ward,
Louise, and George; Charles’: Margaret and Elizabeth; Marshall’s: Rueben and
Francesca.
Services for Dr. Foster will be held on Saturday at
Milward-Broadway: Visitation from 11:30 a.m. until 1:00 p.m., followed
immediately by the memorial service. Rev. Dr. Duane Smith of St. Hubert’s
Episcopal Church will be officiating. Interment will be at the Mt. Olivet
Episcopal Cemetery, in Pineville, LA.
