Dr. JoAnne Sexton

Dr. JoAnne Sexton, born April 3, 1927 in Knoxville TN, passed away peacefully at home on January 10, 2022. She is survived by her sister Mae Marie Quan, Lexington KY and brothers Dr. Robert F. Sexton, Louisville Ky and William Homer and Ebba Jo Sexton, Port Orchard Washington. She is survived by eight nephews and one great nephew: Robert Sexton and Charles Niles Sexton, Louisville, KY Adan L. Quan and Adan T. Quan, East Lansing, MI, Christopher W. Quan, Richmond KY, William S. Quan, Westminister, CO, Robert B. Quan, Fort Collins, CO, Fedrick Sexton, Lexington, KY and Eric S. Sexton, Port Orchard, WA.
Upon finishing her medical degree, residency, and fellowship in Pediatric and Adult Neurology, JoAnne returned to Kentucky where she was interim Director of Maternal and Child Health for six years. During this time, she established a network of traveling clinics focusing on child development problems and epilepsy. She became a professor at Meharry Medical College and Vanderbilt University in Nashville TN.
Her abiding love for Kentucky was developed in JoAnne’s formative years spent in a small mining town in southern Kentucky, her beloved Packard. Everyone that knew JoAnne heard the many stories she told about growing up in the mining camp and she extolled the “most wonderful childhood” she had in Packard.
JoAnne retired to Lexington, KY. She had a unique faith in the goodness inherent in mankind, and abiding faith in her religious beliefs, and a deep love for her family. Her generous spirit and beautiful soul will continue to guide those who knew her well.
