Charles H.
Stewart, Jr.
Born: October 16, 1943, in Louisville, KY to
Charles H. Stewart, Sr. and Gertrude Howard Stewart. He had twin sisters, Anne M. Stewart (who
lives in Louisville, KY) and Betty Stewart Wright (now deceased).
Charles
graduated from Bellarmine College, and the Universities of Louisville and
Kentucky with Masters Degrees in Social Work and Sociology. He has written numerous articles for
professional journals as well as a book of spiritual poems.
In 1970, he
and his wife Julie were charter members of the Bluegrass Wheelman, a local
bicycling club. As an ancestry buff,
Charles discovered some interesting facts about his family. One of the most unusual involved distant
relatives of his mother and father. His
12th paternal great grandfather, James IV, King of Scotland, was
killed in the Battle of Flodden Field by the army of King Henry VIII of England
on 9/9/1513. Henry’s army was commanded
by Thomas Howard, 2nd Duke of Norfolk and Earl of Surrey, his 16th
maternal great grandfather. James led a
charge and was slain within a spear length from Thomas.
Charles
retired as a Warden from the Federal Bureau of Prisons and as an Administrator
from the KY Department of Juvenile Justice.
He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Julie Walsh Stewart, 5 daughters (Kimberly Lemacks of Lexington, KY; Jill Roellig of Green Bay, WI; Kathleen
Gragg of Canton, NC; Jeanie Gorrell of Lexington, KY; and Kerrie Watts of Land O’ Lakes, FL; 9 grandchildren, numerous nieces, nephews as well as their
wonderful pets (Joey, a Standard Poodle and Teddy, a Toy Poodle).
Services
will be conducted on Monday, 23, 2022, at 10:00-11:30 am with a Funeral Mass to
follow at the Cathedral of Christ the King Catholic Church in Lexington, KY
