On November 14, 2022, Bernadette Arleen Long (nee Gillet), beloved Mother, Sister and Aunt was suddenly and unexpectedly taken from this life to the next into the arms of her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Her life is an ode to the joy of laughter, perseverance and compassion.

Bernadette gave with all her heart formed by a love of Jesus, and she was an example of a Christian saint - humble and unassuming, always seeing the goodness in everyone. She was firm in her beliefs, yet never pressing them upon others - choosing to lead by attraction to the life she lived, never imposing herself upon her friends or colleagues, brightening the day of everyone she knew. Still, she was always eager for the next adventure. She loved her friends, her family, her kitties and she adored her daughter, Stephanie.

Wherever she went and whomever she met immediately were charmed by her open smile, her lilting, musical voice and her warm-heartedness. When she arrived at your door, she came with goodies; if she attended an event, she would stay to help clean up. If you needed a friendly presence, she listened with a light and comforting hand, tapping your shoulder.

Bernadette graduated from Tate’s Creek High School and the University of Kentucky where she was a member of the Gamma Phi Beta Sorority and its Alumnae Association. She was a fierce and devoted fan of all University of Kentucky sports and the Cincinnati Bengals. She was a dedicated employee of Old Kentucky Chocolates, beloved by her co-workers who called her a bright and cheerful light in their day. For years, she brought the extra chocolate pieces to Lexington Fire House 14 where she was known as the Little Chocolate Lady. She truly enjoyed eating at the restaurants of Central Kentucky, and her remembered catchphrase was “Yummmmmm!!!

Bernadette is preceded in death by her parents, Burneda C and William J Gillet of Lexington Kentucky and maternal Aunt and Uncle, Eleanor and Ludwig Fogel of Cleveland Ohio. She is succeeded by her daughter, Stephanie Long of Lexington Kentucky, her Aunt Jean C Gillet of Cleveland Ohio, her siblings William R Gillet of Lexington Kentucky, Bernetta E Gillet of Tucson Arizona, and James F and spouse Robbie L Gillet of Fair Grove Missouri, nephew James M Gillet of Fair Grove Missouri and nieces Maren E Gillet of Springfield Missouri and, and Marna L (formerly Gillet) and spouse Nathan Driskill of Kansas City Missouri.

Services will be held at Milward’s Funeral Home xxx . Donations in lieu of flowers can be sent to The Lexington Humane Society.

Stephanie, Jim, Bernetta and Bill, I am so sorry for your loss. I met Bernadette at a school bus stop when we were 13 years old. We became friends, graduating from Tates Creek together, rooming together in the freshman dorm at UK, and pledging Gamma Phi together. Although we drifted apart over the years, I was blessed to visit with her just last month when she was in Atlanta. It was like we picked up where we left off! She was a treasure, always positive and kind. I will miss her as I know you will too. Holding all of you in my prayers, Karen

My sweet, loving good friend Bernadette. I can not believe you are gone. You are the most kind, patient person I know. I am so glad my part-time job at JC Penney brought us together 13 years ago 🥰 We have celebrated birthdays and other occasions ever since then; along with Sharon and Ann (the JCP gang). You are going to be missed so much, dear friend ❤️ Rest in Peace 🙏 🙏🙏

Stephanie, your mom was one of my dearest friends in college and one of the reasons I joined Gamma Phi Beta. She was such a joy! Oh then we had - fraternity serenades, midnight runs to the Tally-Ho, and of course UK sports. I came back to the house after a weekend back home only to find all my stuffed animals hanging by ribbons from the ceiling! She worked hard in college - and many nights she could be found drawing some fantastic interior designs all night. She introduced me to Joe Bolognas pizza. She was a kind mentor and friend - during college and beyond. Was thrilled to see her at the “new” sorority house a few summers back - and had just made a note in my planner to call her this week. Charlie and I are shocked and saddened by this loss. We are praying for your family. Hugs to you and yours.
