Maxine
Whiteside Martin, widow of John E. Martin, Sr. was born in Rutherfordton, North
Carolina on March 12, 1937 and died in Lexington, Kentucky on January 19,
2023. Her parents were Clarence L.
Whiteside and Ella Mae Ensley Whiteside.
She was a graduate of Berea College.
She taught elementary school in the Fayette County School System in the
1960’s at Old Picadome and at Mary Todd.
She was a
member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, Bryan Station Chapter and a
member of Centenary United Methodist Church.
A resident of Lexington, she often spent her winters at her home in
North Palm Beach, Florida.
Mrs. Martin
is survived by her son John E. Martin, Jr. (W. Gay Reading) of Lexington,
daughters Renee Martin Summerlin of Lexington, and Michelle Martin of North
Palm Beach, Florida; her grandchildren William Summerlin (Lesley) of Port St.
Richey, Florida, Robert Summerlin of Lexington, and Elizabeth Sisk (Tyler) of
Lexington; great-grandchildren Marley and Madison Summerlin and Margaret and
Kathleen Sisk; sister Brenda Potts (Robert); brothers Clarence Whiteside (Kathy),
Robert Whiteside (Sherry), Ronnie Whiteside (Loretta), and Darrell Whiteside
(Jane); sister-in-law Jean Harkleroad (Ellis) of Lexington. She was preceded in
death by her beloved son-in-law William Summerlin of Lexington, and a brother
Cecil Ledford.
Services will
be held at Milward Funeral Directors, 159 North Broadway, Lexington, KY 40507
on Thursday, January 26, 2023 with a visitation to begin at 10:30am and a
funeral service to follow at 11:00am followed by a committal service at the
Lexington Cemetery. Clergy from Christ Church
Cathedral will officiate.
