Nellie Marie Smith, 87, passed away on March 12, 2023, surrounded by her loving family at UK Hospital. Born December 10, 1935 in Somerset, KY, she was a daughter of the late Robert J. and Zona Tomlinson Hall.
She is survived by one daughter, Lorra (Richie) Miracle, three granddaughters, Ann-Marie (Ryan) Spoonamore, Katherine Miracle, and Caroline (Mason) Collins, and two great-grandchildren, Charlotte Marie Spoonamore and Henry Richard Spoonamore; and was loved by many cousins, nieces, and nephews.
Nellie grew up in Somerset, Kentucky, and attended Somerset High School. She moved to Lexington, Kentucky in 1990 and worked at UK Markey Cancer Center as an account manager for their research grants. She was a devout member of the Versailles Church of God of Prophecy. She played the piano for over 20 years, a Sunday School teacher, served as the church treasurer, and participated in all Easter/Christmas cantatas.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her five brothers; Chester Hall, Melvin Hall, Robert Hall, Donald Hall, and Charles Raymond Hall, and sisters; Lorena Sluder and Martha Land.
Her daughter and grandchildren cherish their memories of her as a dedicated mother and grandmother. If you knew Nell, you quickly found yourself calling her “Grandmother”, due to her nurturing soul. She had a gift in making you feel loved and valued. Her wittiness kept everyone on their toes. She had a green thumb that could grow the toughest of roses and made the most delicious baked goods. She never wanted you to go hungry or thirsty. In addition, she always made sure she had a refrigerator full of treats for her great-grandchildren and toys/trinkets for them to enjoy. Her most important legacy she leaves is her relationship with Jesus. She was a student of the Word and her faithfulness to Him was unwavering, no matter the circumstance. Nell’s wisdom poured out of her like an overflowing well and could provide comfort to those that needed it.
In honor of her devotion and love to Jesus, please direct memorial contributions to Versailles Church of God of Prophecy.
Visitation will be held Thursday, March 16, 2023 10:00 am until 12:00 pm at Versailles Church of God of Prophecy located at 445 Laval Heights Versailles, Kentucky 40383. The funeral will begin at 12:00 pm, officiated by Bishop Jeff Slone. Interment will be in Athens Christian Church Cemetery in Lexington immediately following the funeral. Pallbearers include Richie Miracle, Ryan Spoonamore, Mason Collins, Lowell Adams, Jerry Burnett, and Paul Wright.
