David Michael Sproull
Wednesday 8th of March 1950 - Saturday 13th of April 2019
David Michael Sproull, 69, passed away peacefully at home
from lung cancer while surrounded by loved ones on Saturday, April 13, 2019.
Dave was born on March 8, 1950 in Danville, IL to the late Donald and Martha
Sproull. The family moved to Lexington, KY in 1960. Dave graduated from Tates
Creek High School, where he played trumpet in the band. He went on to study at
University of Kentucky. He earned his law degree from UK College of Law, where
he met his future wife, Debra Ann Doss. He was admitted to the bar in 1977 and continued
to practice law until his death.
Dave and Debra married in 1977 and had two children, Andrew and Sara Sproull. Dave was an avid UK basketball fan, a talented gardener and griller, and a connoisseur of “dad” jokes and corny dance moves. He listened to KSR religiously, devoured sci-fi/fantasy novels, and loved computer games and Sudoku. Some of his favorite things included Maker’s Mark bourbon, beer cheese, black coffee, and any excuse for a party. His cheese balls, burgers, and chili are legendary. Throughout his life he had the spirit of a hippie and loved rock and roll. He treasured his collection of hats to cover up his bald head. But above all, he loved spending time with his wife and children.
Kind, compassionate, and ready to laugh, he could make anyone smile. He loved his friends and family by caring for their needs, quietly and without fanfare.
An amazing dad, he coached both his children’s basketball teams, never missed a recital, performance, or game, and tutored them in the finer points of sarcasm.
Dave refused to let life’s struggles keep him from smiling. Known to friends and family as “Big Kahuna,” he knew how to have a good time—and wanted everyone around him to have a good time too. He didn’t take himself too seriously and was quick to tease those who did.
In his final days, he never complained and kept a positive outlook despite every medical setback. Loving friends—some of whom Dave had known for over 40 years—surrounded and supported Dave and his family. The family dog, Casey, never left his side. He kept his sense of humor to the end.
He is survived by his wife, Debra; his children, Andrew Sproull and Sara Sproull (Michael Metcalfe); his younger brother and partner-in-crime, Steven Sproull (Paulette); and his beautiful baby sister, Nancy Clements (Steve).
Visitation will be from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. and services at 1 p.m. on Thursday, April 18 at The Episcopal Church of the Resurrection, 3220 Lexington Rd., Nicholasville, KY. A Dave-style party to immediately follow. Memorial contributions are suggested to The Episcopal Church of the Resurrection or Bluegrass Care Navigators.
So sorry to hear of Mr Sproull’s passing. When I saw his picture in the obituary I felt sadness but also recalled a great dad to his children. My deepest sympathy to all of you! Prayers for all. SPPS Mrs Kelley
