John Howard Everly died peacefully in his sleep on Monday, August 19.  John grew up in David, Kentucky and Mallory, West Virginia, later attended West Virginia University, and received his Bachelor’s Degree in Geology.  After meeting Joyce Carrier in Newport, Rhode Island the two were quickly married.  John was stationed in Newport during his six years of service in the Navy.  While in the Navy, John served as an ensign, a weapons officer, and attended Officer Candidate School, earning the rank of Lieutenant.  John also received recognition as part of the National Defense Service, Vietnam Service, as well as receiving the Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal.  Last year, John was privileged to be a member of the Honor Flight with Bill by his side.  John and Bill enjoyed a trip for our heroes to Washington, D.C. to visit and reflect at their memorials.

John had always been a part of the Presbyterian Church, whether it was in Prestonsburg, KY or most recently at Meadowthorpe Presbyterian Church in Lexington, KY.  He was very active within both churches, singing in the choir and keeping watch over the finances.  While singing in the choir, John always had Joyce (a Catholic, by the way) by his side.  John also had a love for woodworking.  All of his grandchildren are grateful for his handiwork, from bookshelves to bedframes; Pops was always working on a project for those he loved.  The entire immediate family was blessed to have spent a wonderful week together this past July in Hilton Head – one of Dad’s bucket list items that proved to be a momentous and timely vacation.

John was preceded in death by his wife, Joyce Ann Everly (Carrier), his son, Paul Darlington Everly III, and his parents, Paul Darlington Everly and Margaret Agusta Shoffner, and step-father William Crawford, and his siblings:  “Pete” Crawford, Jane Crawford Spears, and Ann Everly Shoffner.  John was the loving father to Ann Baird (Elmer) of Frankfort, KY; Elizabeth Grayson (Shaun) of Stow, OH; and Bill Everly (Nevie) of Lexington, KY.  He was a loving Pops to Kylee and Tyler Baird; Will, Emily, and Benjamin Grayson; and Parker and Mason Everly.  He is survived by his brother, “Jack” Crawford of Abingdon, VA and brother-in-law, Dr. Joe Spears of Paintsville, KY.

Services are planned for August 24 at Meadowthorpe Presbyterian Church in Lexington, KY.  Visitation from 1-3pm followed by the funeral service at 3pm.  Private burial following for immediate family.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to St. Jude Children Research Hospital.
