Patricia Kaye Skaggs-Bender, 80, passed away peacefully Friday, November 22, 2019. Our mother was born March 25, 1939 in Long Beach, CA, the first child of Homer and Mary Webb at a time when her father was serving in the U.S. Navy during WWII. After her father’s release from the Navy, the family moved to Portsmouth, OH where she enjoyed her childhood and especially her time at Portsmouth High School, where she was a cheerleader. After high school, she received her nursing diploma in 1960 from Mercy Hospital School of Nursing in Portsmouth. The following year, she met and married Sam Skaggs where they soon started a family. Her career jump-started in nursing where she worked as an RN at Portsmouth Receiving Hospital, the City Health Department and Portsmouth City Schools before moving to Lexington, KY in 1973.
In Lexington, our mother found a new passion in real estate. While raising her three children, Brent, Bruce and Samantha, she began working as an agent for Century 21. After 10 years of being divorced, she went back to her roots in Portsmouth (and nursing) where she met and married Otto Bender. She was a beloved and devoted RN for many years, working at Hillview Retirement Center and at Scioto County Health Department until her retirement in 1999.
For those who knew our mother, retirement would not stop her, so she went back into real estate and was an agent at Mary Webb Realty in Portsmouth. Years later, she moved back to Lexington with her husband and enjoyed working as a residential real estate agent until she hung up the keys and decided to enjoy true retirement. She was a member at Andover First United Methodist Church and the women’s community outreach group for the church, Rachel’s Circle.
Our mother is survived in legacy and amazing memories by her husband Otto Bender, Lexington, KY; children, Brent Skaggs (Sherry) of Saginaw, MI, Dr. Bruce Skaggs (Jennifer) of Belchertown, MA and Samantha Bryan (Mark) of Atlanta, GA; 7 Grandchildren; 3 Great-Grandchildren; a host of nieces, nephews and other beloved friends and relatives.
In lieu of flowers, our mother requested monetary donations be sent to Lexington Area Parkinson’s Support Group https://www.parkinsonslexington.com/donate.html that helped her cope with this terrible disease that affected her life until the end, and Bluegrass Hospice Care https://9419.thankyou4caring.org/ where the nurses and aides were godsends to our mother and our family during the final stages of her life journey.
Milward Funeral Directors are entrusted with the arrangements for services. A celebration of our mother’s life will be held December 6th at Andover First United Methodist Church located at 3801 Polo Club Blvd., Lexington, KY. Family will receive friends for visitation from 10:00 am - 11:00 am with funeral service at 11:00 am followed by a reception. Our mother will be laid to rest in Wheelersburg, OH at Memorial Burial Park on Saturday, December 7th at 11am with a ceremony for close family and friends.
