James E Harvey
Sunday 28th of August 1949 - Saturday 23rd of November 2019
James E Harvey, 70, passed away peacefully on November 23, 2019, after battling a lengthy illness. His wife of 42 years, Kathy Allen Harvey, was by his side.
James (Jim) was born on August 28, 1949, to Roland Foss and Olive (Siewert) Harvey in San Francisco, CA. The oldest son of an Air Force Major, Jim had the opportunity to live in places such as Japan and Spain before the family settled outside of Barksdale Air Force Base in Bossier City, LA.
After graduating from Bossier
High School in 1967, Jim enlisted in the United States Air Force and worked as
a Chaplain’s Aid while attaining the rank of Staff Sergeant. He served his
four-year enlistment with honor and was discharged in 1975. After discharge
from the Air Force Jim returned to Louisiana to start college at LSU-S. It was
here that he met the love of his life, Kathy, who he wed on January 1, 1977.
Jim would go on to earn two degrees from LSU-S and post-graduation he began
work in the field of accounting, becoming a CPA (Certified Public Accountant).
It was a career that he enjoyed and one that would eventually lead him and
Kathy to relocate to Lexington, KY in 2002. In 2006 his family would start
their first local business in Lexington, Bluegrass Barkery, which would be
followed by a second location and eventually a sister company, The Local Wag.
Jim’s role and presence as CFO was only bested by his ability to play Santa
Claus as a yearly fundraiser for the four-legged customers of Bluegrass Barkery
and their families. This tradition would become one of the most important
things to him later in life.
In his life, Jim was known for coaching years of T-ball and baseball teams for the YMCA in Shreveport. A Boy Scout himself, he was also instrumental in founding Pack 25 at Shreve Island Elementary and later served as Scoutmaster for Troop 92. If it was a Sunday afternoon during football season you were bound to find him cheering on his favorite team, The Dallas Cowboys. All of these things he loved but family and friends would always remain the most important.
Jim was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his wife Kathy; three children, James Harvey Jr, Clayton (Karen) Harvey, Kari (Michael) White; five grandchildren, Jimmy, Beau, Emmy, Addy, Chloe; siblings, Susan Cornett, Tommy (Paulette) Harvey, Patti (Kavin) LaCaze, Maria (Tommy) Starkey, Laura (Mike) Bratcher; as well as numerous nieces, nephews and close friends that he considered his family.
The family would like to say a special thank you to the University of Kentucky Transplant team as well as the numerous doctors, nurses, techs and other members of the 8th floor Cardiac Intensive/Progressive Care unit who fought as hard as he did for so long. Your knowledge, compassion, courage, strength, and love will forever be remembered and honored by our family.
Mr. Harvey’s services will occur on Wednesday, November 27, 2019 at Milward-Man O’ War: Visitation from 5:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m., followed immediately by the memorial service at 6:00 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, we ask that you instead make a donation to your favorite children’s or animal charity. Please also consider giving the gift of life by becoming an organ donor.
I am so sorry to hear that Jim passed away. I did not know Mr. Harvey but am a frequent customer of Bluegrass Barkery and know Clay & Kathy.
