Allen O. Perry
Friday 19th of July 1935 - Friday 20th of March 2020
Allen Ora Perry was born in Plainwell, Michigan on July 19, 1935 to Oliver and Sarah Inez Perry. He was preceded in death by two older sisters, Nancy Claire Perry and Martha Jane Kerr. He died on March 20, 2020 near his home in Massachusetts.
He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Manuela “Nell” (Rivera) Perry and sons, John (Julie) of Lexington, Kentucky and Carl of Boston, Massachusetts, John and Julie’s son Charlie (Ashley) and their daughter Kendra.
Due to current public health precautions, a private funeral service will be held followed by burial at Machpelah Cemetery, Mt. Sterling, KY. The family is planning a celebration of his life tentatively in July, hoping that travel restrictions are lifted by then.
After an Honorable Discharge from the U.S. Army, Allen married Nell Rivera in 1959, and they returned to, Indiana University to complete his degree in Geology. They returned to Puerto Rico where Allen worked for the U.S. Geological Survey and Department of Public Works. After the birth of their sons, the family returned to Indiana, where Allen was employed by the Indiana Department of Natural Resources and completed his M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Geological Engineering at Purdue University. He was subsequently an Environmental Engineer at Argonne National Laboratory in Illinois followed by a long career with the U.S. Department of the Interior in Indianapolis and Washington, D.C. until retirement in 1996.
Dr. Perry was the author of many scientific publications and held adjunct professorships at Indiana University/Purdue University at Indianapolis (IUPUI), the University of Mississippi, Penn State University and Johns Hopkins University. He was a Certified Professional Geologist and a member of several professional associations.
Allen and Nell’s greatest joy has been their two sons, both of which have fulfilled lives and of which their parents are very proud. In lieu of flowers, a scholarship fund in memory of Allen O. Perry is being established at the School of Science at IUPUI. Memorial gifts can be sent directly to: IU Foundation, PO Box 6460, Indianapolis, IN 46206-6460.
