Barbara Akers Borchardt, born January 2, 1927, was an active, contributing member of the community throughout her life.
As a University of Kentucky music graduate, Barbara taught private piano lessons for 37 years. Between 1963 and 2007, Barbara served Arlington Christian Church in many musical capacities. Intermittently, Barbara served as adult and youth choir director, handbell director and organist. Her senior aerobics students greatly enjoyed the big band sound tracks Barbara created to accompany the classes she led at Bell House, Senior Citizen's Center, Richmond Place and Arlington Christian Church.
As an avid tennis and bridge player, Barbara developed and enjoyed many friendships through the years. She also enjoyed the friends and neighbors she had on Cochran Road, where she lived for 48 years. Barbara and her late husband, Dick, are well known and celebrated for their July 4th backyard picnic and fireworks display accompanied by stirring patriotic music. This annual event was attended by dozens of their friends and neighbors. Since 2011, Barbara resided at Merrick Place where she enjoyed many bridge games, new and old friends, her family and Molly the cat.
In addition to her parents, Barbara was preceded in death by her husband, Dick Borchardt and son, Carl Borchardt.
